Let me give you my honest ratings on the hair growth treatments I get asked about constantly — because not everything on your shelf deserves to be there.
Here's how I broke it down:
⭐️ 10/10 — Topical Minoxidil FDA-approved. The most well-established treatment we have for androgenetic alopecia. I recommend the 5% foam or solution for both men and women. Chef's kiss.
🌿 5/10 — Pumpkin Seed Oil There's actually one solid randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showing 400mg daily increased hair count 40% vs. 10% in placebo. It may work similarly to finasteride with a much milder side effect profile — promising, but we need more data.
🌱 2/10 — Rosemary Oil Some animal studies exist, but we just don't have meaningful human data yet. I'm not sold.
🚫 0/10 — Biotin Never been studied in clinical trials for alopecia, yet it's marketed everywhere for hair growth. Worse — the FDA has warned it can interfere with lab testing, including troponin and hormonal assays. Skip it.
🧴 8/10 — Ketoconazole Shampoo 2% Not ideal as monotherapy, but it has anti-androgen properties and studies show improved hair density, hair shaft size, and proportion of anagen (growth phase) follicles — similar to minoxidil regimens.
🔴 9/10 — Red Light Therapy FDA-cleared and backed by meta-analyses showing significant improvements in hair density and shaft size. I love that it layers well with systemic therapies.
🧬 8/10 — Exosomes This is one of the most exciting frontiers in regenerative medicine. Early studies are promising for hair growth and density — but not all exosomes are created equal, and we need more data.
The bottom line: hair loss is rarely a one-and-done fix. Most of my patients see the best results when we combine several of these treatments strategically. If you're struggling with hair loss, please see your dermatologist — we can build a plan that actually works for you.
