Topical estrogen on your face is off-label — here's what that means

If you have a history of melasma and want to try topical estrogen — start with a test spot.

Here's my advice:
→ Skip the forehead and cheeks at first
→ Try a small area like your chest, arm, neck, or under your eyes
→ Watch for any new hyperpigmentation before applying it to your face

Why? Because topical estrogen cream is technically off-label for facial skin — it's formulated for vulvar skin.

We're extrapolating based on the fact that all of our skin has estrogen receptors, and that during perimenopause and menopause those receptors become depleted elsewhere.

The science is still evolving, and best practices are still being established. So if you have melasma, be cautious and go slow.
